BAROID IDP was one of the first drilling fluid companies to apply its vast knowledge of drilling fluids to the industrial Horizontal Directional Drilling market. Early on, it was obvious that conventional horizontal drilling wisdom from the oilfield was not applicable in the utility and river crossing business.
The unique physical and geologic environment of many utility bores, and all river crossings, require gel strengths and filtration control be optimized to achieve a successful horizontal bore. Mother Nature, as always, dictates utility borings and river crossings require the optimization of different drilling fluid properties due to unconsolidated sands, reactive clays, gravels and cobbles that are commonly encountered in the horizontal environment. Therefore, a primary focus in developing a drilling fluid for HDD is in the suspension of drill cuttings, combined with reduced viscosity, to ultimately allow for better maintenance of flow and effective removal of solids. BAROID IDP maintains products specifically designed to meet the unique challenges of the HDD environment.
Bentonite is an extraordinary natural clay that has proven to be a valuable asset industry-wide due to its numerous benefits and versatility. Formed from the weathering of volcanic ash, Bentonite is largely composed of the mineral Montmorillonite. Due to its layered structure, Bentonite is renowned in particular for its superior absorption, hydration, binding and swelling capabilities.
TUNNEL-GEL® PLUS
TUNNEL-GEL® PLUS viscosifier is a specially formulated, high-yield bentonite designed for use in tunneling and large diameter HDD operations and promotes rapid viscosity development while maintaining effective borehole stabilization and enhanced filtration control in most water-based drilling fluids.
The use of TUNNEL-GEL PLUS viscosifier assists and promotes the following:
- Enhanced viscosity development in freshwater drilling fluids

BARO-GEL™
BARO-GEL™ viscosifier, is an easy-to-mix, finely ground (200 mesh), specially selected sodium activated bentonite for the vertical drilling industry. BARO-GEL viscosifier imparts viscosity, fluid loss control, and gelling characteristics to freshwater-based drilling fluids.

CEBOGEL® QSE PLUS composes cylindrical pressed Bentonite rods made from 100% sodium-activated Bentonite and is characterized by its impressive water absorption capacity. CEBOGEL QSE PLUS is effectively used to restore drilled clay layers and to lower permeability of dams and dykes during restoration and construction. In HDD operations, a key feature of CEBOGEL QSE PLUS is its ability to rapidly swell when in contact with water, enabling the product to form a clay plug in the entry or exit pit, resulting in fast and efficient sealing. CEBOGEL QSE PLUS works effectively in slightly brackish water.

POLYMERS
PENETROL® DRY
PENETROL DRY surfactant is used to assist in counteracting the sticking tendencies of encountered clay or shale during drilling operations.
PENETROL DRY is a free-flowing granular product and is easy to mix. It is effective at low concentrations and produces minimal foaming during high shear mixing. It is compatible with other Baroid drilling fluid additives and NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 60 certified.

- Reduces and/or minimizes bit balling
- Improves drilling efficiency by preferentially coating the bottom-hole assembly and drill string

AQUA-CLEAR® PFD
AQUA-CLEAR PFD concentrated liquid polymer dispersant provides superior mud and sediment removal from the producing formation and gravel pack. This product is also a highly effective mud thinner. AQUA-CLEAR PFD dispersant contains no phosphates.

BARAZAN® D viscosifier is a powdered Xanthan gum polymer used to viscosify fresh water, seawater and monovalent brines. BARAZAN D viscosifier is treated with a dispersant to help improve mixing and promote the yield of the product with reduced amounts of shear as compared to BARAZAN® viscosifier. BARAZAN D viscosifier can provide excellent suspension and sheer thinning properties and be used up to 250°F (121°C).

CEBO DRILL-GROUT
Cebo Drill-Grout is a self-setting suspension used to completely fill annular spaces in HDD, Microtunneling and Vertical Drilling operations. Cebo Drill-Grout can also be used for other applications such as sealing holes of pulled piles. The product hardens into a plastic material with a low water permeability, preventing underground water layers from mixing. By using Cebo Drill-Grout, subsidence of the ground can be prevented, and steel pipes are protected against corrosion.
Cebo Drill-Grout is tested for use in groundwater by the “Hygiene-Institut des Ruhrgebiets”.

EZ-MUD® GOLDEZ-MUD® GOLD shale stabilizer is a 100% active synthetic dry polymer that acts as a reactive clay and shale stabilizer by inhibition the uptake of water. Because of its unique physical structure, EZ-MUD GOLD shale stabilizer is easily dispersed and mixed into a fluid with minimal shear and does not significantly increase the fluid viscosity. EZ-MUD GOLD shale stabilizer is suitable for use up to 300°F (149°C) in fresh water, sea water and monovalent brines. High pH environments (> 10.5) can cause hydrolysis, particularly at elevated temperatures, and should be avoided.

N-SEAL™
N-SEAL acid soluble lost circulation material is specially formulated, extrusion-spun mineral fiber. Due to its solubility in weak acids, N-SEAL lost circulation material is easily removed from production zones.

- N-SEAL material can be used as an additive for loss of circulation in concentrations of up to 70 lb/100 gallons (86 kg/m3).

PAC™-L
PAC™-L modified natural cellulosic polymer provides filtration control in most water-based drilling fluids without substantially increasing viscosity. PAC-L polymer, when added to a QUIK-GEL® or BORE-GEL® bentonite slurry, yields a fluid system suitable for drilling in sandy formation. PAC-L polymer can be added to vegetable or mineral oil to provide an oil-based fluid suspension, which can be poured into drill string directly.
